MLK Behavioral Health Center
Los Angeles County
The Challenge
The MLK Behavioral Health Center brings together multiple Los Angeles County services in one location, supporting individuals experiencing mental health challenges, substance use disorders, and housing instability. M3’s scope focused on the facility’s waiting areas and administrative workspaces—spaces that shape the first impression and support the teams delivering care. These environments needed to feel welcoming and non-institutional while also performing reliably in high-use, operationally demanding settings.
The Approach
Working alongside the project’s architectural and interiors team, the furniture strategy focused on creating spaces that feel approachable while supporting day-to-day functionality. In waiting areas, furnishings were selected to soften the experience and create a more comfortable, human-centered environment. In administrative spaces, the focus shifted to supporting staff with solutions that enable efficiency, organization, and long-term usability in spaces that are in constant use.
Key Solutions
Welcoming Waiting Environments
Furniture selected to create a more approachable, less institutional experience for visitors entering the facility.
Support for Administrative Workflows
Workstations and support furniture designed to meet the needs of staff managing a high volume of activity.
Durability in High-Use Spaces
Products chosen to perform over time while maintaining a consistent and cohesive aesthetic.
The Outcome
The completed spaces support both the experience of those entering the facility and the teams working within it. By focusing on the furniture layer—where people directly interact with the environment—the project helps create spaces that feel more approachable, function more efficiently, and better support the day-to-day realities of care delivery.
